Selling Livestock on a Scottish Island

Selling Livestock on a Scottish Island
How do you sell livestock on a Scottish Island? Answer: it's not easy!

As part of the Farming Funny podcast I had the opportunity to witness the Islay livestock sale on December 1st 2023.

With the help of Islay Estates Manager Gillian Bignal and United Auctions auctioneers Ross Fotheringham, we put together the following video as a testimony to the success of the sale.

Stepping off the plane from Glasgow I wasn't sure what to expect. On an island that's only 25 miles long by 15 miles wide, I was struggling to see how United Auctions could justify a sale on Islay.

But with 700 cattle and over 2,000 sheep going through the market that day, it was clear to see just how productive the island is. United Auction host a sale every 3 weeks from August to December which is testimony to the success of farming on Islay.

After the sale, we managed to sit down and interview Ross and Gillian over a few drinks and asked them how important the sale was to the island.
